Back to Black

Ok, so, sticking to black for holiday dressing isn’t anything new (it’s basically the ‘Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking’ festive equivalent), BUT I swear that updated silhouettes, textures and details make the go-to neutral as exciting as ever. We’re going well beyond the LBD. See slideshow below to peep my favourite options which include sexy jumpsuits, body skimming fits that are more covered than not, oversize lace and sequins in new shapes (j’adore that kimono wrap dress!). Don’t forget to add statement jewelry, I’m big on big earrings at the moment, plus a deliciously dark lip colour and any style of flashy footwear. I’ll be in silver flats, FYI. Yoga, Girl, Yoga

This image of Caley Alyssa Yavorsky, yogi supreme, in an incredible backbend yoga pose has been seared into my brain since I came across it in Self magazine last summer. I think it’s a jaw-dropping image of beauty and strength, and I find it majorly inspiring. So much so that I may or may not have nabbed the pic as my avatar image on my MindBody app log-in. It’s all about visualization, people! Am I anywhere near as flexible? Hells no. But I’m working on it, and have been committed to hot yoga for the past few years. I remember thinking “I’ve never sweated this much in my life, I love it!” during the very first class I tried. Now it’s all I do in terms of a workout and I can’t imagine life without it. Going to class and sweating to death keeps me sane and kicks my butt. Every. Single. Time. At the beginning of November I decided to embark on a 30-day yoga challenge, which, no surprise, is an attempt to hit the mat every day for a month. It had been a couple …

Coat Check

Winter is legit coming, which means the time is now to secure yourself a super chic coat. My advice when it comes to outerwear? Embrace a print, shake things up with a bit of sparkle or leather details, get wrapped up in a fluffy texture or try a surprising colour. Basically, anything but basic black is the way to go. Sweater Weather

I don’t know about you, but getting ready to face chilly weather takes both mental and sartorial prep on my part. I need to take my winter coat to the dry cleaner, see if any pairs of boots could use a cobblin’ and pull out all those heavy layers I’ve stowed away since spring. And assembling pieces I love to wear is mandatory because long and dark is just how Canadian winters like to roll. If you’re not able to bundle up in items you adore you’re doomed. Knits obviously play a big role here, which makes this the perfect time to re-visit a few of my favourite looks from the Best Health October 2015 issue. Any of these plush pieces would be a warm welcome on a frosty day. And the winner is…

International runways aside, the red carpet watch during awards season that kicks off every year and culminates with the Academy Awards is essential viewing for any fashion follower. Whether it’s documenting a fashion veteran like Julianne Moore push the envelope or witnessing a new style star be born, as was the case with Lupita Nyong’o in 2014, covering celebrity style is anything but boring. Even when it’s bad, it’s all good fun. Here’s a look at my top picks from the 2015 Golden Globes which appeared in Cineplex Magazine.

Be a loud mouth!

Forget about black, orange is the new red…especially when it comes to lipstick. Citrus-tinged reds deliver an equally powerful punch as classic blue-based scarlets, but with a kicky modern tang that elicits instant “I want some!” envy. One of my faves is Sephora Collection Rouge Cream Lipstick in It Girl, $15.50. It delivers intense, long-lasting pigment that doesn’t dehydrate lips. Using the patented application technique of swiping on a base layer, followed by lightly blotting with a tissue, and applying another ‘top coat’ layer, I find it stays put all day. Have you found an orange-red lip colour you can’t live without? Tell me, please! I’m always looking to add to my collection.

Jacket Required

An assignment earlier this year for Best Health had me tracking down new takes on the classic trench coat. Besides the three beauties shown here, there are so many stylish trench options available from perfectly on-trend pastel hues to drapey, slouchy versions that beg to be worn with your best distressed denim. Confession: I have a serious soft spot for a good piece of outerwear. Something you can throw on top of anything and feel instantly ‘dressed’ is a style win. And now that spring has officially sprung, I’ve happily said sayonara to my parka and heavy wool coats, and reacquainted myself with the lighter outerwear that’s been hanging patiently in my closet for what seems like an eternity. How you doin’ leather moto? Animal print topper, you’re clearly ready for a walk on the wild side. And, dear military jacket, I see you’re geared up for regular rotation. As for my preferred type of trench: a sleeveless style is calling my name. What say you? Is there a particular jacket style that’s caught your eye? I’d love to hear about it!

Welcome to the Wall

“Put yourself in the way of beauty.” That line from Wild by Cheryl Strayed has stuck with me since not reading the book and seeing the film last winter. It’s uttered by the mom character played by Laura Dern (wasn’t she SO good?!) as she watches a sunrise with her kids. I like sunrises, too, but what I like even more are glossy fashion magazine images. Which brings us to this attempt at beautifying my “home office,” which, let’s face it, is really a glorified nook in my apartment. Eye-popping pics have been imbedded in my head since my pre-teen days when I would devour copies of Sassy, Mademoiselle and Seventeen from cover to cover. And I loved me a collage project. Carefully choosing and clipping out images, preserving their beauty, melding them together with other shots that spoke to me without saying a word. But I didn’t just want to read magazines, I wanted to create them. I had no idea what  that meant at the time, but somehow with a combination of luck and hard work I found my way into that world. I …
